Festival Facts

  • The Villages Independence Festival (“VIF”) was established in 1992 as a celebration of Family and American Independence . The VIF purpose is to promote our common heritage and our family ties that bind the Villages together.
  • The event starts with a parade, which terminates at the Festival Grounds on the Church property ( Memorial Drive Baptist Church ).
  • There are numerous rides and games for children.  There is a petting zoo, pony rides, mazes, slides, a train, fishing ponds and bag toss games for the youngest attendees.  Face painters, hair spraying and spin art for the teens.
  • For the adults, local community groups set up booths where members talk about community programs and events. If your community group wants a booth contact Susan Schwartz at susanschw@aol.com.
  • The musical entertainment varies from year to year.  Recently, the Festival has opened with the singing of the National Anthem, in the past this has been led by a Metropolitan Opera tenor, local talent and whatever else comes in between.  When we don't have live music, we have a DJ playing CDs.  In the past the Choir has performed towards the end of the Festival.
  • The Festival always ends with the big ladder truck from the fire department spraying water from the top of its fully extended ladder over the kids who gather in the middle of the grounds.
  • Attendance is generally between 4-5,000. There is no cost to attend, we are not trying to raise money for any cause, and in fact fundraising is prohibited.
  • The six Memorial-Spring Branch Villages that participate in this event are Bunker Hill, Hedwig Village , Hilshire Village , Hunters Creek, Piney Point and Spring Valley .
  • These villages were incorporated separately around 1954.
